WHAT TO EXPECT, WHEN EXPECTING…
Nutrition, Lifestyle and Pregnancy
Just as in preconception care, what you eat and what you do is imperative throughout your pregnancy. Remember, healthy babies come from healthy parents. Your health and lifestyle choices throughout your pregnancy nurtures, supports and benefits the constitutional vitality and health of your new-born throughout their adult life. Optimal health as is influenced by your diet, nutritional status and lifestyle choices also reduces the risks of unwanted side-effects and risks associated with pregnancy. It is thus essential that you remain optimally healthy throughout your pregnancy, both from nutrition and a lifestyle perspective.
We all know that we are what we eat, and this could not be more true and pertinent during pregnancy. There are the well-known don’ts; don’t drink, smoke, or take drugs; don’t eat raw fish and eggs, soft cheeses, or smoked meats; avoid salad bars, sushi and left-overs. But what about coffee, is it allowed? Is one glass of champagne ok? Can I still eat tinned tuna? What about mayonnaise? (it contains raw eggs, so a definite no!). Miranda will help you navigate your way through this information.
Your nutritional requirements during pregnancy are so much more than just folic acid! Your requirements for many nutrients escalate during pregnancy, especially in the first and third trimesters, and different nutrients are needed more than others depending on the time you are in your pregnancy. Iron, calcium, omega 3 essential fatty acids, B vitamins, zinc, iodine, vitamin D3 are just a few that are required in therapeutic doses at different stages during our pregnancy. These requirements will remain at their highest-level right through until the completion of breast-feeding. Whilst utilising food as medicine and ensuring appropriate dietary choices to support a healthy pregnancy is ideal, usually nutritional supplementation is required as an insurance policy- lets be sure you are getting everything you need. Remember, it is not just about you now; it is about the health of your baby. But which supplement when? How much? With extensive nutritional supplementation knowledge, Miranda will expertly advise and help you.

From week 34 (and earlier if you would like) is a lovely time to start preparing physically and emotionally for labour and birth. Weekly acupuncture during this time may help prepare you for birth by relaxing your body and mind, and help to gently stimulate the body’s natural processes at the same time. Treatments will focus on your general health and well being, supporting energy, and helping to manage any stress you may be experiencing as the time draws near. Herbal medicine, herbal tea, homoeopathics and moxa may also be used during this time to encourage your body to do what it instinctively knows to do.
