3 symptoms is enough to investigate further on either side of the thyroid fence. If you experience any 3, get tested.

I want to point out, a couple of things:

🔥Hyperthyroid (overactive): hot, fast & wet

🥶Hypothyroid: cold, slow & dry

Symptoms used to be this clear cut:
If you had fast thyroid- weight loss, sweating, greasy hair and skin, diarrhoea, increased appetite, palpitations.

If you had slow thyroid - typically unexplained weight gain, constipation, dry hair / skin, hair loss, fatigue and cold hands / feet
⚠️However, this isn’t the case anymore. There is alot of cross over ie. low thyroid with palpitations, sore muscles and excessive sweating.

Low thyroid is much more common, although commonly missed. Why?

➡️ lack of comprehensive testing
➡️TSH does NOT test your thyroid
➡️Subclinical hypothyroidism *mild thyroid failure* is where thyroid hormone levels are within normal reference laboratory range but thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is mildly elevated.
🧠TSH tests your brains communication with thyroid
‼️So, this means if TSH is going up, your brain is increasing it’s communication with the thyoid because there is a PROBLEM! There is a thyroid issue bubbling under the surface. It’s your first little sign that something is happening…don’t ignore it.

💉Get your thyroid properly tested

It probably hasn’t. It’s usually not 🙄😞

TSH does not test your thyroid. It tests your brain. Your brains communication with your thyroid.

TSH means thyroid stimulating hormone. It literally stimulates your thyroid to make thyroid hormones T3 and T4. It does NOT test your thyroid.

TSH (and sometimes T4 if you’re lucky) is the only hormone that has been tested when your GP tells you your thyroid has been checked and it’s fine. It’s all in your head. Here’s a script for *Lexapro/Prozac/Pristiq* (insert antidepressant of choice)

Now, this is not an exercise in criticising your GP. GP’s are answerable to Medicare and get audited if they are seen to be over testing, or testing unnecessarily. Meaning, they are meant to start with TSH and if that’s in range, no further testing.

➡️BUT, the range is broad. Just being “within the range” is not the same as optimal.
Two people can be in the range, at the opposite extremes 0.65 (low normal) and one at 4.95 (high normal), and yet neither is ideal. And both can be experiencing symptoms. Yet, they are both told their thyroid is “fine”.

✅This is what you need to test your thyroid :
TSH
T3
T4
Reverse T3
T3: RT3 ratio
TPO antibody
Tg antibody
Thyroid receptor antibody
